A remote western beginning
Travel to Londorosi and enter untouched forest with an armed ranger, where wildlife still moves through Kilimanjaro's lower wilderness.
Private ready-to-book journey
Moshi · Londorosi · Shira · Lava Tower · Barranco · Karanga · Barafu · Uhuru Peak · Mweka
A nine-day Kilimanjaro ascent through the mountain's remote western wilderness, across Shira Plateau and the southern circuit, with the time and quiet to let every altitude change feel considered.
Overview
Lemosho begins far from Kilimanjaro's busier trailheads, travelling through remote forest and the high, open space of Shira Plateau before joining the mountain's southern circuit. It is among the most scenic and least crowded ways to climb, offering a wider sense of wilderness, striking views toward the Western Breach and a more gradual rhythm through the early altitude.
The route takes time seriously. Two nights across Shira, the climb-high and sleep-low passage by Lava Tower, and a dedicated acclimatisation day above Karanga give your body the space it needs to adapt. An armed ranger accompanies the forest section, while your mountain team keeps every practical detail quietly in place. The result is a serious ascent that still has room for wonder.
Highlights
Remote forest, the broad Shira Plateau and a deliberately generous acclimatisation rhythm make Lemosho a route for trekkers who want to experience the mountain rather than simply cross it.
Travel to Londorosi and enter untouched forest with an armed ranger, where wildlife still moves through Kilimanjaro's lower wilderness.
Two camps on the plateau create a gentle early ascent and room to take in the Western Breach, glaciers, moorland and wide high-altitude skies.
Lava Tower and an additional Karanga acclimatisation day allow the body to adapt before the summit phase begins in earnest.
Follow Kilimanjaro's most dramatic southern landscapes through Barranco, Karanga and Barafu before sunrise at Uhuru Peak.
Day by day
Follow the journey below. The map will keep pace with each chapter, while the small details stay deliberately open to the rhythm of the wild.
Kilimanjaro International Airport · Moshi
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport to a warm Excellent Guides welcome, then travel to Moshi for a calm first night at your lodge. Lemosho begins farther from town than other routes, so this evening is for rest, final equipment checks and a proper briefing with your lead guide. The days ahead will cross some of Kilimanjaro's most remote and beautiful ground; tonight is simply for arriving well before the road turns west.
Londorosi Park Gate · Mti Mkubwa Camp
After breakfast, make the scenic five-hour drive to Londorosi Park Gate, where the Shira Plateau can already offer glimpses of wildlife. An armed ranger joins the group for the forest section, a reminder that this remains a living wilderness. From the gate, trek 7 kilometres through untouched forest from 2,200 to 2,780 metres, reaching Mti Mkubwa Camp after around five hours. Dinner is served beneath the trees, with the rare feeling that you have entered Kilimanjaro from its quietest side.
Mti Mkubwa Camp · Shira Camp 1
Leave Mti Mkubwa after breakfast and climb gradually toward Shira Camp 1 at 3,500 metres. The 5-kilometre walk takes four to five hours, moving from forest into lower moorland where shrubs, wildflowers and open views replace the close green canopy. Kibo's western face begins to appear with startling clarity. Lunch at camp is followed by rest or an optional afternoon walk across the moorland, allowing the body to acclimatise while the plateau's scale slowly reveals itself.
Shira Camp 1 · Shira Camp 2
The move from Shira Camp 1 to Shira Camp 2 is short at around 5 kilometres, but it is rich in atmosphere. Cross the open plateau over five to six hours, allowing the body another valuable day at altitude while the views extend toward the Western Breach and the mountain's high volcanic forms. There is no need to force the pace on Lemosho; this is exactly what the route is for. Arrive at Shira Camp 2, settle in and let the evening light make the plateau feel as vast as it truly is.
Shira Camp 2 · Lava Tower · Barranco Camp
Today crosses semi-desert terrain toward Lava Tower at 4,630 metres, where lunch gives your body time to experience the altitude before the route descends nearly 680 metres into Barranco. The 11-kilometre stage takes seven to eight hours and forms a key part of Lemosho's acclimatisation logic: climb high, then sleep lower. The descent brings remarkable views of Western Breach, Breach Wall and the Great Barranco Wall. By evening, Barranco Camp is set beneath that towering wall, ready for one of Kilimanjaro's great sunset scenes.
Barranco Camp · Karanga Camp
After breakfast, climb the Barranco Wall with your guide's calm, close support. It is one of Kilimanjaro's most exhilarating passages, a concentrated ascent that opens into a sequence of ridges and valleys. Continue 5 kilometres toward Karanga Camp at 4,035 metres, taking around five hours through landscapes that seem to change with every turn. An afternoon acclimatisation walk offers a little more altitude before returning to camp, preparing body and mind for the high mountain still ahead.
Karanga Camp · Barafu approach
Today is dedicated entirely to acclimatisation, one of the quiet advantages of the longer Lemosho rhythm. After breakfast, hike toward Barafu Camp, allowing the body to work at a little more altitude before returning to Karanga later in the day. This climb-high, sleep-low strategy significantly improves summit confidence without asking you to sacrifice recovery. Back at camp, eat well, hydrate and organise the small things that matter most at altitude: layers, water, energy and a clear sense of what tomorrow will bring.
Karanga Camp · Barafu Camp
After breakfast, move the final 5 kilometres to Barafu Camp on its narrow rocky ridge at 4,640 metres. The afternoon has a single purpose: prepare for the summit. Check trekking poles, thermal layers, headlamp and camera batteries; carry drinking water in insulated bottles so it does not freeze in the night cold. Barafu is exposed, but the team makes it feel ordered and calm. Eat early, rest while you can and let the mountain's final ascent wait until the stars are high.
Barafu Camp · Stella Point · Uhuru Peak · Mweka Camp
The summit climb begins around 11:30 PM with tea and biscuits before the route rises through volcanic scree toward Stella Point at 5,685 metres. Sunrise reaches the rim as you continue across snow-covered ground to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point on Kilimanjaro and in Africa. Take in the view, celebrate the moment and descend to Barafu for a brief rest before continuing to Mweka Camp. It is a long day, but your team holds the rhythm carefully from the first dark step to dinner at lower altitude.
Mweka Camp · Mweka Gate · Moshi
After breakfast, descend 10 kilometres through rainforest to Mweka Gate over four to five hours. The mountain softens around you as the air warms and the forest grows dense again. At the gate, receive your certificate: green for Stella Point or Uhuru for the summit itself, then thank the crew whose work has made the journey possible. Continue to Moshi for a hot lunch, a real shower and a final lodge night, where the achievement deserves time to be properly celebrated.
Moshi · Kilimanjaro International Airport
After breakfast, your guide transfers you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight. The Lemosho route is complete, but it leaves a particular kind of memory: ranger-led forest, an unbroken Shira horizon, the shadow of Barranco Wall and first light at Uhuru Peak. We hope the journey travels home with you and, one day, brings you back to Tanzania for another chapter.
