Marangu is Kilimanjaro's best-known route, a clear path from rainforest to the roof of Africa with mountain huts instead of tents along the way. That simplicity makes it inviting, but it should never be mistaken for effortless. The mountain still asks for good pacing, serious preparation and a team that knows when to protect the rhythm of the ascent.
Our six-day version gives the route the day it needs at Horombo for acclimatisation. This is not an add-on; it is an investment in comfort, summit confidence and the ability to enjoy the mountain's changing worlds: lush forest, open heath, the moonlike saddle and the final ridge to Uhuru Peak.

Day 00
Kilimanjaro International Airport · Moshi
A Kilimanjaro welcome, then a restful Moshi evening
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport to a warm Excellent Guides welcome, then travel to Moshi for the evening. Chanya Lodge offers a relaxed place to rest before the mountain begins in earnest. Meet your guide, review equipment and let the practical details settle into place over a calm dinner. Tomorrow, the road turns toward Marangu Gate; tonight is for arriving well and feeling the quiet anticipation of the climb ahead.
Day 01
Marangu Park Gate · Mandara Hut
Marangu Gate to Mandara, through the rainforest
After breakfast, make the short drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate on Kilimanjaro's eastern side. Registration complete, enter a rainforest world of tall canopy, misty light and the soft sound of the trail beneath your boots. Cover approximately 11 kilometres over four to five hours, with lunch on the way, before reaching Mandara Hut at 2,700 metres. If conditions and energy allow, a walk to Maundi Crater gives a beautiful first panorama across Kenya and northern Tanzania.
Day 02
Mandara Hut · Horombo Hut
From rainforest to the open heath of Horombo
Leave Mandara after breakfast and watch the rainforest gradually give way to lower heathland, where shrubs replace tall trees and the sky begins to feel larger. The 10-kilometre hike to Horombo usually takes five to six hours, with a lunch pause framed by the first compelling views of Mawenzi Peak. Arrive at 3,720 metres in time to settle into the hut, rest and look across toward Kibo, whose summit will become your focus in the days ahead.
Day 03
Horombo Hut · Mawenzi Turn Hut
The day that makes summit confidence possible
Today is kept purposefully light. A short acclimatisation hike toward Mawenzi Turn Hut allows your body to work at a little more altitude before returning to Horombo for rest, food and preparation. It is one of the route's most valuable days, turning a direct ascent into a more intelligent one. Use the time to refine layers, check boots and listen to your guide's summit briefing, while your body does the quieter work of adapting to the mountain.
Day 04
Horombo Hut · Kibo Hut
Across the saddle to Kibo's high desert
After breakfast, leave Horombo for the 10-kilometre ascent to Kibo Hut at 4,700 metres. First pass through upper heath, then cross the great saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a high alpine desert with the stark beauty of another planet. The walk takes around six to seven hours and is deliberately steady; this is where careful observation of energy and altitude matters most. Kibo offers no running water, but it offers the stillness and proximity of a night spent directly beneath the summit.
Day 05
Kibo Hut · Gilman's Point · Uhuru Peak · Horombo Hut
Uhuru Peak, then the long golden descent
Wake around midnight for a light breakfast and begin the summit ascent beneath a sky full of stars. The route rises through darkness toward Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then continues to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa. The day is long, often more than 15 hours and approximately 16 kilometres, but your guide manages the pace one step at a time. Celebrate at sunrise, descend to Kibo for a short rest, then continue across the saddle to Horombo Hut for the deep, well-earned sleep that follows a true summit day.
Day 06
Horombo Hut · Mandara Hut · Marangu Gate · Moshi
Back through the forest, carrying the summit home
After breakfast, begin the final 18-kilometre descent, first toward Mandara Hut for lunch and then through the rainforest to Marangu Gate. The familiar trail feels different in reverse: warmer air, denser green and the growing awareness that you have crossed an entire mountain. Receive your summit certificate, thank the crew who made the climb possible and return to Moshi for a final evening at Chanya Lodge. Dinner becomes a celebration of the effort, friendship and perspective you have earned.
