A northern trail with room to breathe
Begin near Nale Moru through farmland and pine forest, then watch the trail open toward the Kenyan plains and Kilimanjaro's eastern glaciers.
Private ready-to-book journey
Moshi · Rongai Gate · First Cave · Kikelewa · Kibo · Uhuru Peak · Marangu
A seven-day Kilimanjaro journey from the mountain's quieter northern side, where open views toward Kenya, smaller trails and a gentle approach create a beautifully secluded ascent.
Overview
Rongai begins on Kilimanjaro's northern flank, farther from Moshi and far from the crowded feeling found on some of the mountain's busier approaches. The longer drive to the trailhead is part of its charm: the route opens through farmland and pine forest toward the Kenyan plains, then rises gradually into a world of moorland, volcanic rock and sweeping views of Kibo's eastern glaciers.
The route is tented throughout the ascent and descends by the popular Marangu trail, letting you experience two different sides of the mountain in one complete story. A dedicated acclimatisation day near Mawenzi gives the journey the thoughtful pace it deserves, helping you arrive at summit night with more comfort, confidence and room to appreciate the mountain's quieter character.
Highlights
Rongai trades crowd levels for open northern views, tented nights and a gentler, more secluded approach to Kibo's summit cone.
Begin near Nale Moru through farmland and pine forest, then watch the trail open toward the Kenyan plains and Kilimanjaro's eastern glaciers.
Move through open moorland toward the dramatic peaks of Mawenzi, with camp set in a sheltered valley near the Kikelewa caves.
A gentle walk toward Mawenzi Turn Hut gives your body time to adapt and your summit plans a more confident foundation.
Reach Uhuru Peak from Kibo, then descend by the Marangu route through Horombo and the rainforest to a different side of Kilimanjaro.
Day by day
Follow the journey below. The map will keep pace with each chapter, while the small details stay deliberately open to the rhythm of the wild.
Kilimanjaro International Airport · Moshi
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport to a warm Excellent Guides welcome, then settle into Chanya Lodge in Moshi. The Rongai trailhead lies farther away than most, on the northern side of the mountain, so this opening evening is a chance to prepare properly. Meet your guides, review equipment and rest before the journey turns toward the quieter, more secluded side of Kilimanjaro at first light.
Rongai Park Gate · First Cave Camp
After breakfast, meet your guides and porters, then travel north toward the Rongai Route. The climb begins at Nale Moru village, following a small trail through cultivated farmland before it enters a beautiful pine forest. The 8-kilometre ascent rises gently from 1,950 to 2,600 metres over three to four hours, with the chance of seeing Kilimanjaro colobus monkeys in the trees. As the forest thins, arrive at First Cave Camp on the edge of the moorland, with the Kenyan plains spreading out below.
First Cave · Second Cave · Kikelewa Camp
After breakfast, continue with a steady climb toward Second Cave, where Kibo Peak and its eastern glaciers appear more clearly ahead. Following lunch, leave the main trail and cross open moorland toward Mawenzi's rugged silhouette. The distance is modest at around 4 kilometres, but the landscape asks you to slow down and look outward. Arrive in a sheltered valley near Kikelewa Caves at around 3,600 metres, a wonderfully quiet place to camp beneath the mountain's higher forms.
Kikelewa Camp · Mawenzi Turn Hut
Today is set aside for acclimatisation, a quieter day that makes the summit plan stronger. Take a short walk toward Mawenzi Turn Hut with your guide, letting the body work a little higher before returning to camp for rest. The route's beauty is in its restraint: there is no need to rush when a thoughtful day can make tomorrow's altitude feel more manageable. Eat well, hydrate, organise layers and become familiar with the weather patterns that will shape the higher mountain.
Kikelewa Camp · Kibo Hut
After an early breakfast, continue toward Kibo Hut at 4,700 metres. The first section travels through upper heathland before the route enters the broad alpine desert saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. It is a 10-kilometre stage of around six to seven hours, sparse and almost lunar in atmosphere. Your guide keeps the pace even and watches carefully for any signs of altitude strain. Kibo has no running water, but your team has prepared the camp for the early summit start and the mountain's final, focused night.
Kibo Hut · Gilman's Point · Uhuru Peak · Horombo Hut
Wake around midnight for a light breakfast and begin the summit ascent through the dark. The route climbs toward Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then continues to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa. The 16-kilometre day often extends beyond 15 hours, but your guide manages it patiently, one small section at a time. After photographs and a summit pause, descend to Kibo for rest before crossing the saddle to Horombo Hut, where dinner and a long, well-earned sleep wait at a gentler altitude.
Horombo Hut · Mandara Hut · Marangu Gate · Moshi
After breakfast, descend the Marangu side of Kilimanjaro, stopping at Mandara Hut for lunch before the forest gathers around the trail again. The 18-kilometre route takes around six to seven hours, a generous final walk through the mountain's changing climates. At Marangu Gate, receive your summit certificate and thank the crew who has made the crossing possible. Your vehicle is ready to return you to Moshi and Chanya Lodge, where a shower, dinner and a quiet celebration bring the journey to a close.
