Machame is one of Kilimanjaro's most scenic ways up, crossing the mountain's south-west and southern faces before descending by a different line through the forest. Its reputation as the Whiskey Route speaks to its adventurous character, but the deeper pleasure lies in its changing landscapes: rainforest mist, Shira Plateau sunsets, the high drama of Barranco Wall and the pale volcanic world beneath the summit.
This seven-day version gives the route room to breathe. The climb high, sleep low rhythm around Lava Tower and the measured move through Karanga help your body adapt, while the experience stays beautiful rather than hurried. Day 00
Kilimanjaro International Airport · Moshi
A calm Moshi welcome before the mountain begins
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport to a warm Excellent Guides welcome, then continue to Moshi for a comfortable night before the ascent. Your lodge is a quiet place to rest, meet your lead guide and make final equipment checks. There is nothing to prove today. The mountain will ask for energy and attention soon enough; this opening evening is for arriving well, sleeping deeply and letting anticipation gather at the right pace.
Day 01
Machame Gate · Machame Camp
Machame Gate to a first night in the rainforest
After an early briefing and breakfast, travel from Moshi to Machame Gate for registration and your first step onto the mountain. The route begins through lush rainforest, where the 11-kilometre trail rises from 1,800 to 3,010 metres over around six hours. Rain can make the path muddy and slippery, but the forest has its own rich reward: deep green canopy, changing birdsong and the distinct feeling of leaving ordinary life behind. At Machame Camp, your crew prepares warm water, dinner and a comfortable first night beneath the trees.
Day 02
Machame Camp · Shira Camp
The forest lifts into Shira's open horizon
Leave Machame Camp after breakfast and continue through the last of the rainforest before the trail opens into Kilimanjaro's moorland zone. The 5-kilometre stage is short in distance but generous in atmosphere, taking four to five hours as you rise to 3,840 metres. After lunch, cross a rocky ridge onto Shira Plateau, a wide and spectacular world with Western Breach and glacial forms in view. Shira Camp is exposed, cold and completely beautiful at sunset, when the mountain's scale becomes impossible to ignore.
Day 03
Shira Camp · Lava Tower · Barranco Camp
Lava Tower high, Barranco low
Today carries you east through semi-desert terrain toward Lava Tower, reaching around 4,630 metres after roughly five hours. Lunch at that height is purposeful: it lets the body experience the altitude before the route descends nearly 680 metres into Barranco Valley. This climb-high, sleep-low pattern is one of Machame's great strengths. The 11-kilometre day takes seven to eight hours, with extraordinary photographic views across Western Breach and Breach Wall before Barranco Camp appears beneath the towering Great Barranco Wall.
Day 04
Barranco Camp · Karanga Camp
Barranco Wall, then onward to Karanga
After breakfast, climb the Barranco Wall, one of Kilimanjaro's most exciting and rewarding sections. It is less a technical climb than a concentrated, beautifully guided passage, with the route rising above the valley into a series of ridges and folds. Continue over changing ground to Karanga Camp at 4,035 metres, covering around 5 kilometres in five hours. An afternoon acclimatisation walk helps prepare you for the higher mountain, while the camp's open views offer a calm place to eat, rest and absorb how far you have come.
Day 05
Karanga Camp · Barafu Camp
Barafu, where the summit becomes close
A five-kilometre move brings you from Karanga to Barafu Camp at 4,640 metres, a narrow rocky ridge below the summit cone. The distance is modest, but altitude makes every step deliberate. Barafu is exposed, and the afternoon is kept focused: organise summit equipment, check trekking poles, thermal layers, headlamp and camera batteries, then insulate drinking water against the cold. After an early dinner, rest while you can. In only a few hours, the mountain's final chapter begins.
Day 06
Barafu Camp · Stella Point · Uhuru Peak · Mweka Camp
Sunrise at Uhuru Peak, then down to Mweka
Wake around 11:30 PM for tea and biscuits, then begin the summit climb over loose volcanic scree toward Stella Point at 5,685 metres. The pace is slow and steady, led by your guide through the dark until sunrise reaches the crater rim. Continue across snow-covered ground to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate, take in the view and descend to Barafu for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp at 3,090 metres. It is a 17-kilometre day of more than 15 hours, and a memory for life.
Day 07
Mweka Camp · Mweka Gate · Moshi
A forest descent and a warm Moshi farewell
After breakfast, descend 10 kilometres through rainforest toward Mweka Gate, a softer final walk that takes four to five hours. At the gate, receive your certificate: green for Stella Point or Uhuru for the summit itself, then thank the mountain team whose experience has carried the journey safely to its end. Return to Moshi for a hot lunch, a hot shower and an overnight at your lodge. Your airport transfer the next morning is arranged around your flight, leaving this final evening simply to celebrate what you have done.
