When to see the Great Migration, month by month

A moving story, not a fixed date

The best time is the chapter you want to live.

The Great Migration does not arrive, perform and disappear. It is a year-round movement of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle responding to rain and fresh grass across the Serengeti ecosystem. Some travellers come for the extraordinary rush of new life; others want big-cat country, wide green plains or the suspense of a river crossing.

That is why the most useful question is not simply, 'When is the migration?' It is, 'Which version of the migration feels most like mine?' This guide follows the rhythm month by month, then helps you choose a safari with the right pace, places and expectations.

The migration calendar

A year written across the plains.

Wildlife is wonderfully independent. These windows describe the usual rhythm, while rainfall and herd decisions decide the exact scene on any day.

January - February Ndutu and the southern Serengeti

The short-grass plains are green, open and full of anticipation. Herds settle into the south, creating excellent wildlife viewing and a wonderfully spacious sense of the Serengeti.

February - March Calving season

This is the new-life chapter. Thousands of calves are born across the plains, and the abundance naturally draws predators. It is emotional, energetic and deeply memorable.

April - May The herds begin to gather

Long rains freshen the landscape and the migration begins to turn. The story is less about one dramatic event and more about scale, changing skies and the quiet logic of movement.

June Western Corridor and Grumeti

The herds press westward, the landscape opens and momentum builds. This is a wonderful time for travellers who enjoy movement through varied terrain and fewer fixed expectations.

July - August Northern Serengeti

Herds reach the north and the famous river season becomes possible. A crossing can be a thrilling spectacle, but it happens on wildlife time, which makes patience part of the experience.

September - October The Mara River chapter continues

The north remains a strong choice for expansive savannah, active wildlife and the possibility of crossings. Even between crossings, the scenery and resident wildlife keep every drive rewarding.

November - December Returning south with the short rains

New rain pulls the movement back through the eastern and southern Serengeti. The cycle softens into its next beginning, often offering beautiful light, green landscapes and a more relaxed rhythm.

What makes each season different

There is no wrong chapter, only a different kind of wonder.

A calving safari is about life, predators and the open short-grass plains. A northern safari is about scale, anticipation and a chance to wait beside the river. The green season is quieter, more atmospheric and beautiful for travellers who love changing light and the feeling of space.

The migration rewards curiosity more than certainty. Build your safari around the experience, not a promise that nature cannot make on command.

Choose your kind of safari

Match the journey to the feeling you want.

Your guide, camps and routing matter as much as the month. We refine all three around the moments that mean the most to you.

01

For new life

Choose the south from late January through March for calving, predator action and an extraordinary concentration of wildlife.

02

For classic safari days

Choose central Serengeti for big-cat country, varied landscapes and a dependable wildlife story beyond the migration's headline moments.

03

For river drama

Choose the north from July through October and allow enough nights to wait patiently for the rhythm of the herds.

04

For quieter beauty

Choose the rains and shoulder seasons for green plains, softer light and a safari that feels more intimate and unhurried.
