7 Day Rongai Route

The Rongai route commences on the northern side of the mountain and is considered one of the less frequented routes. While it entails a longer drive to reach the starting point, it offers the splendid reward of breathtaking vistas and the high probability of experiencing a more secluded climb with fewer fellow trekkers. It's important to note that if you choose the Rongai route for your ascent, you are required to descend via the Marangu Route, which is the most popular and widely utilized trail. Accommodation is provided in tents along the route.

Day 0 Kilimanjaro International Airport Welcome | Moshi

Embark on your adventure as you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Our team will warmly welcome you and transfer you to Chanya Lodge for an overnight stay with breakfast included.

Day 1 Moshi | Rongai Park Gate

Altitude: 1,950 m - 2,600 m Hiking distance: 8 km Hiking time: 3-4 hours After breakfast at Springlands Hotel, you will meet your guides and porters and prepare your equipment before departing to Rongai Route. The climb begins from the attractive wooden village of Nale Moru on a small path that winds through crop fields before entering pine forest. The track then starts to climb consistently, but gently through attractive forest that shelters a variety of wildlife, including the beautiful Kilimanjaro Colobus monkey. The forest begins to thin out and the first camp is at the edge of the moorland zone with extensive views over the Kenyan plains. Overnight 1st Cave Camp.

Days 2 2nd Cave Camp Mandara Hut - Horombo Hut

Altitude: 2,600 m – 3,450 m Hiking distance: 4 km Hiking time: 3–4 hours The morning walk is a steady ascent up to the Second Cave with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. After lunch, we leave the main trail and strike out across the moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. Our campsite is in sheltered valley near Kikelewa Caves (3,600m). Dinner and overnight at 2nd Caves Campsite.

Days 3 Horombo Hut

Acclimatization Day Take an extra day at Horombo for acclimatization and training. Explore the area with a walk up to the Mawenzi turn hut. This day will help you acclimatize and familiarize yourself with summit weather conditions. Spend another night at Horombo Hut.

Days 4 Kibo Hut

Altitude: 3,720 m – 4,700 m Hiking distance: 10 km Hiking time: 6–7 hours Rise early for breakfast and prepare for your hike to Kibo Hut. The first half of the hike passes through upper heathland, while the second half crosses a lunar-like saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo. This alpine desert offers unique landscapes. Watch for signs of altitude sickness. No running water at Kibo Huts.

Days 5 Horombo Hut

Altitude: 4,700 m – 5,895 m – 3,720 m Hiking distance: 16 km Hiking time: 15+ hours Wake around midnight for a light breakfast and the summit ascent. Begin the hike in the early morning before dawn to reach Uhuru Peak around sunrise. Stop at Gilman’s Point on the Crater Rim to witness crater views. Afterward, continue to Uhuru Peak, the summit. Descend to Kibo Hut, then cross the saddle to Horombo Hut for the night. Enjoy dinner and well-deserved sleep.

Days 6 & 9 Marangu Park Gate

Altitude: 3,720 m – 2,700 m Hiking distance: 18 km Hiking time: 6-7 hours After breakfast, descend to Mandara Hut for lunch and continue to the park gate. Your transportation will be waiting to take you back to Moshi. Spend the night at Chanya Lodge. Tips are recommended and highly appreciated and can be given to the Guide at Chanya Lodge. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. -FB
